Hi McBeever2k9, When I worked at a fishery the fly I used most was a size 16 hare's ear sugar lump buzzer..The problem with a caenis hatch is that the fish feed very close to the surface and their window of sight is very small so you have to get your fly right in front of it's nose for it to make that mistake and take your fly. I just concentrated on one feeding fish until I got it, I could at least cast to it more than twenty times to get it to take the fly.. All the best Davie

Hi Chance, This style of fly is very popular with loch fishers when fished in a team of two to three flies, this one would be more on the top dropper when fished like this. It can also be a very good dry or emeger fished on it's own.. All the best Davie

Hi randolph20, I would agree with you that the verison I tyed would take a bruising from the species of fish you mentioned and a more durable dressing would be needed. The gentleman that asked me to tye the Cicada sent me a link to fishing in New Zealand where they were targeting fish in pools with a Cicada fly, the fly would only be cast at these fish so I feel that it would be durable as I have tyed many small flies tyed in this style. Hi Davie: My concern is about the durability. As I am aware that the fly might be floating very well, but after few strikes from fish or hook into few aggressive ones eg. largemouth bass, pike, or other warm water species where its region have significant cicada hatch, the hair will be a lot loser and won't float that well. This is another reason some prefer foam rather than deerhair. just my two cents cheers

in a tying book i have,the cicada has 2 gray foam triangles as the back,ice chenille for the underbody pearlescent sheeting as the wing,orange 210 denier thread as a rib,and a size 2 curved nymph hook that looks like a stimulator gap.i wonder if you could try to tie it?note:the eyes are the ends of the trianglesbent back and has the wing material pulled in between.it's a very cool fly.the thing is it was in a new mexico fly tying book that only shows flies created in NM.please reply.thanks!!!!

Wow Davie. That is a great tie. If i may offer a tip though. I have seen cicada fall into the water where im fishing and the wings layout as a mayfly spinner because they make a real fuss to get out of the water, and large trout go bonkers for them. I would fish it with a heavy twitch to simulate the struggle and i wouldn't want it to float to high, body half in and half out would be ideal. Keep up the great work Davie Cheers

Hi Kostis, I would use a floatant on this fly as I tyed it with the tips of the deer hair for the colour rather than the ends near the bottom which have more of a hollower fibre and need less of a floatant. To be honest I would always add a floatant as your fly would last a few more fish before you would have to change it.. I'm glad that you liked the fly... All the best Davie

I love simple patterns like this. They work just as well as ones that take longer to tie. Another great tie Davie. Do you have any foam dry fly recipes? Like ants, beetles or hoppers? Maybe even some bead-body czech nymphs would be great too.

Hi Paul, For crunchers and small nymphs the capes I like to use are Metz and Whiting Hen Necks in white for dying to furnace and ginger. For snatchers, small dries I use Whiting Cock Saddles Hebert Miner which you can buy in half capes and would save you money. One feather from these capes could tye you up to a dozen flies, best colours are black,cream golden badger,grizzly,ginger and furnace. I'm sure you will find them on the net, I bought mine from the Glasgow Angling Centre. Davie

Hi Chance, You could easily tye this wee fly in most colours I would especially tye it in yellow, cream and all brown's and Olive's too..The pink is a colour for some reason seems to work when others are struggling so it's worth tying a few.. Hi Paul, I bought a kit when I first started and had the same problem as yourself. I was tying dry flies and in the packet I only found one or two that were the rights size so I cut the fibres and they still caught fish, so I wouldn't say no to what you said but it would be better to buy capes to suit the flies you intend tying..What flies do you want to tye so I can recommend the right capes for you to buy? cheers Davie, when i first started tying, i tied these before i knew it was already a pattern. i used it as a way of using up the big hackles left over on a cape and only recently found it to be a known pattern! it just go's to show.. you try coming up with new tying methods but they have all been done before.. the only new method i can think of is the half hog winging method.. would you know roughly how long the wing post methods been around? thanks again, Tight lines Tight lines

Hi TotallyFlyTying, The Carp here in the U.K are more interested in eating boiles or dog biscuits, so tying a fly to repersent these and you would be able to catch one but you will have to go abroad to find the wild fish that feed on crayfish and alike.. All the best Davie A

nice fly Davie, i tied a lot of carp flies, and fished a lot of carp. to make your flies last a pit longer i would add a bit of Soft-Tex, or epoxy to form the shell back, and it also makes the fly more realistic. and if you add some color to the epoxy, or Soft-tex it would look even better. Hi Davie, thanks a million for tying the Clan Chief. Its in my top five flies. I love your method of tying the tail. I normally tye mine as per book, ie,one colour at a time forming loops to bulk up the floss and mostly end up with a bulky body. Hi BertBrehm, If you are tying a fly that you are going to be fly fishing in an international competition or even some of the many other competitions in which you use the same rules then your fly has to be no more than15/16th of a inch in the total length and the hook size no more than 5/8ths of and inch and also tyed with no weight added like adding lead or a bead. Hi Chance, It is Bird Fur which is in the Whiting Hackle range and I did dye the one in the video hot orange it is one of the easiest colours to dye. SLF stands for Synthetic Living Fibre which is a good sub for seals fur and is easier to get I believe over your way as it's produced by Wapsi. All the best Davie

Just wondering Davie if you might stick a wee bit to the end of your (I have to say it - superb lessons) as how to fish the patterns you tie. I hacked a few of those wee things but didn't know how to fish them. I had a bullet head caddis as a sighter and one of those hanging off as a dropper. I tried drifting the flies, then short retrieves - but - bugger all. Any tips?

Hi guyt121, I have heard of these lochs but never fished or tyed for them. The nearest loch to them I have fished was Lubnaig and my best fly was the Goats Toe but I'm sure many of the traditional flies would work well. If I had to pick a few then the Bibio, Kate Mclaren, Blue Zulu a great fly when the sun is blazing, Soldier Palmer, Coch-Y-Bondu, Clan Chief and Teal Blue and Silver I could name a few others but these flies would be on the top of my list... Have you tried figure-eights then wrapping around the base of the eyes as you would a parachute post? I've found that one can get away with less figure-eights due to the cinching effect of the para-post wraps. Just a thought.

Hi humbldsrvnt, You can tye the wing on whatever way you like but the main reason I tyed it like this is when you bring the hackle to the front of the wing there will be no step so it sits better.. All the best Davie

That's a beautiful fly Mr. McPhail. I noticed you put the wings on opposite from the way you put the wings on your parachute mayfly with the same style wings... is there a particular reason for that? I really like that wing style and seem to get a lot more fish with it, but for some reason it seems like it's more difficult for me finish the fly without the fibers of the wing separating. You make it look so easy!

Davie, thanks so much for that. I didn't have the materials for this fly and to be honest we don't get a mayfly hatch around here but your suggestion to fold the spare bit back after tying in the wing has helped me a lot with my Black Gnats. Cheers again, Andy

Hi Jon, The holder I use is called a Xcelite which can take any size of needle and the small blades you can buy for craft work. For the size of the needle I'm not sure I just buy packs of them from my local supermarket and there's not a size on them... All the best Davie

There is a product called Tuff Film that you can buy in art supply stores. Artists use it to keep drawings from getting smudged. Spray it on your quills to keep them from splitting, It works great on wing cases also. Love your style Davie, I am always looking forward to your next fly.

Hi 1968drum, If you use the larger primary quills from the Mallard wings you will find them much better for wet flies but don't worry too much about the wings splitting as they will do this when you fish them anyway and they still catch fish. I have tyed many wings over the years and the one thing I found is not to have the slips of feathers too wide.. All the best Davie

hi there Davie, always enjoy your work. I always have trouble with wings, mainly because the fibers split on me, especially if i have to retie due to misjudging the length and such, this is very frustrating...do you think it could be because of inferior materials...i generally use quill from orvis, being the most accessible. any words of wisdom?

Lovely fly again Davie. I see you put a collar hackle in at the end and haven't seen this before on this pattern. IMHO I think it adds a lot to this pattern. Superb tying, really shows off the skills that we aspire to mate.

Hi KAMPONIX, I have fished traditional wet flies like the Wickhams Fancy down and across with great success as well as upstream also with great success but I have never been told this is wrong as the more methods you have when fishing the more chance you'll catch. My most successful traditional wet fly is the Red Tag tyed on hook sizes 10s to 16s... All the best Davie
