@rexmundi2012 - I love this movie. I'm a huge fan of Kenneth Branagh's and when this movie ran the credits, I watched it all the way through to find out what piece of music was playing. Thanks, I will check this out with my Dad...on an interesting sidelight, I played in a jazz band with Harold Land, Jr. in 1966, I was the only white kid, all of us around 15..I sucked...

I just found out that when I was a kid, in the 60's, after Brown had died, his widow and children used to come over to my house in Culver City! I didn't know that they were friends, and just found out. Very cool, especially as I was just starting to play trumpet at that time. Well, Brown PLAYED...I just played AT trumpet....a true master, and such a loss to die so young.

@1982elenita Actually the Beatles "she's a woman" was lifted from THEM, if you listen to their version of "Sugar Bee" from 1964, it's the intro and chords to She's a Woman, this was later verified by Paul, who really didn't recall who it was, but that he had heard the riff somewhere. It was far from a hit, but obviously he heard it!

About the Beatle's influenc - I once heard an interview with Huey Meauxe (manager/producer) who said he spent a weekend in a hotel room with a case of Thunderbird trying to figure out the Beatle's secrect. The formula dawned on him - he applied it, and they had hits. By the way, the great Doug was a child prodigy on steel guitar, and played on the Grand Ole Opry as a child! He's among my top favorites of all time!

The original of this classic was written with the back beat of a Cajun two-step in 1965. Sir Douglas was persuaded to speed it up a little bit and add an organ. Great decision. This song was a giant hit at the same time as She's A Woman by the Beatles (sounds a bit like it, too), My Gal by the Temptations, and Can't Help Myself by the Four Tops. Pretty stiff competition.

He was born in New York City 8/17/20 and died in 1985. He played with Coleman Hawkins, Lucky Millinder, was in the army, then with Jimmy Lunceford, Sy Oliver, Nellie Lutcher ... toured with Terry Gibbs, Don Redman, Bud Powell, Pearl Bailey, Billy Eckstine and Lina Horne. Freelanced all around NYC until he died.

Only 226,00 views? This is the baddest tune by any of Miles' bands IMO. What a lineup! This and the first quintet are my favorite eras. I was fortunate enough to see Miles in Philly in 1985 I believe, the guitarists were Mike Stern, and possibly John Scofield. Awesome! Kind of Blue was what got me hooked on jazz, a top 5 island must have. I love the way they play outside off the chords in this piece, as Bruno put it, something I've yet to figure out how to do.

You are watching the baddest group ever assemble in my humble opinion. I have been listening to jazz for many years, and no other group played with the fire or passion that this group did. Miles best band ever. I love each member of the group, for they all brought something special to the band. Jazz had never seen a drummer like Tony Williams before (although Max Roach was the King). Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock compositions, were outstanding and the rock of the group Ron Carter.

supreme interplay between tony and miles. then between carter and miles, then shorter and herbie, and so on. how on earth did they achieve this level of freedom whilst making the thing into a coherent structure and form? absolutely surreal. interesting to see miles telling shorter to take it down a notch when he hands over after his first solo, this happens quite a bit on footage from this time. I really think he was trying to rein in the wild man tony williams.

As a big fan of Fripp's playing I have never understood why the Guitar Craft guys are restricted to playing Ovation guitars with mushy piezo pickups. It sounds like a wall of rubber band guitars made out of cereal boxes. Wouldn't it be cool to hear a bunch of guys wailing away on acoustic guitars with some depth and character to the notes? I say almost because i haven't seen every live recording, but every recording I've heard has been played inside blues scales. But... regardless. Fripp is not more creative than "any other" guitarist. There are plenty of guitarists far more impressive and diverse.

Sorry but Harold Wright's recording of the entire Weber quintet is the best recording around, I highly recommend it. This guy's tone is peanuts compared to Wright's HOWEVER, I still consider Leister a virtuoso clarinetist of course.

There is very little pentatonic sound in Douglas' solo dude, I don't know where you learned the word pentatonic but it certainly wasn't at music school. As for needing to be a "no ears musician", no man. Everyone has their own taste. At least this has some musical credibility, not like, for example, Bitches Brew (which far too many people say is "Miles' best album") ... As for Dave, he's one of the hottest trumpeters out there right now ... even if you don't like the music, his sound is great

I did a transcription of this tune for class. If you listen to the bass line, Dave plays a bar of 4, and four bars of three. I'm pretty sure the melody was written along this form as well. It all lines up very nicely.

i'm sorry but you can hear it still subdivided into 3, its 4+6+6. just cuz it happens to fall back into palce if you count 4/4 does not make it 4/4. the same could be said about 3/4 really. it'll eventually end back up to 4/4 (just 4 measures of 3/4)

I think I got it.. like jasennett said the phrasing on the first part is 1 bar of 4/4 and 4 bar of 3/4... and the next phrase is in 6+6+4 the sax/trombone unison part is 6+3+3+4.. all the phrases add up to 16 beats or 4 bars of 4/4. So I guess the score is written in 4/4 and all the other timing are implied within 4/4... at least that's my best guess.

That's what I thought too, and that's what I meant when I said that the phrases may be displaced. I am guessing chart is written 4/4 the entire time with the phrases starting in different part of the beat... kind of like the middle section Peri-Scope, but a lot more complicated. You don't have to write it in different meter, and I am guessing at their level they can easily notice the implied rhythm by playing the score. Gee I really wish I could see the chart for this
