u should actually spin cast up stream so when the trout/fish sees itl have to hold its breath and travel down stream other wise it will get water into the lungs and there fore making it swim faster to get the spinner and the fish wont think twice about tasting it itl just gulp it down with out a thought trust me ive done this before

What i would suggest for fresh water is a okuma sierra reel,a echo series fly rod(8 foot 6 inch) for a 6-7 weight range.One thing i can`t stress too much is to MATCH the fly line to the rod.This will allow the most enjoyment in learning this sport.Look up his and hers fly shop in newport beach,ca.-tight lines!

Its a pity that the brown trout numbers have halfed in the last 10 years in the south island east coast rivers due to water extraction from intensified dairying. Also, a lot of the upland spawning streams are being periodically silted up due to lack of control in forestry. Intensive farming has wiped out NZ flyfishing - better to spend your money in Argentina.

I would do anything to be able to fly fish for trout like that. I live in North Carolina and the trout fishing here is pathetic to say the least. I actually went today and I didn't see a single fish. It's pathetic how people poach fish around here. You would never catch a wild brown around here like that. I've actually never seen one like the size of those fish, except at the hatcheries. But who wants to catch a stocked brown like that? They are stupid and easy to catch. And not pretty at all.

i prefer to use marabou that is thinner and less stiff with wider "scales" as i call them coming off of two sides. u get more action out of the fly then. looks more life like. this especially helps in big slow deep pools.

I suggest tying in a thin copper wire at the same time you tie the hackle on. wrap the hackle and wire forward together and this will ad alot more durability to the fly. Makes it so it wont fall apart after catching three or four fish. also I suggest wraping one wrap of chennile behind where the hackle is first tied on to prevent backwards slippage of the hackle.

I believe that the best all around trout fly is the hare's ear nyphm (wet fly), but if insects are hatching on the water; you want to match the hatch with something similar. When using any kind of lure or fly, make sure you use these steps in order: 1. Match the size of what the fish are eating first. 2. Match the shape next. 3. Then try to match the color. I love the "purists" who scoff at the bugger. Screw them. Put on a propeller and counter wrap through the hackle with tinsel or even tying thread for a more durable fly. You can't mess up a bugger. Hackle, no hackle whatever. Lash on some fluffy feathers and a fuckin' pipe cleaner and go get ripped.

Great all round fly. If you add a touch of lead weight to the front or a bead head, it makes the action even more effective for deeper waters. (Not all waters allow weighted flies.) Another effective technique is to use a nymph pattern about a foot or two in front of the wooly bugger. It appears like the wooly is chasing the nymph. I have sen trout bypass the wooly bugger and take the nymph. It seems like the fish take the nymph more for like a reflex strike then hunger sometimes.

Yes, redfish are very very very delicious. But there is usually a regulation on how many you catch. Down here in Florida it's 2 redfish per boat. 4 or 6 saltwater trouts per boat and so on. Same with snooks and others. But do try a redfish!

@elementskater48 Let it sit is one technique, . But with streamer fishing, usually your doing the strip pause, strip pause. Sometimes the fish want fast strips, sometimes slow. Let the fish tell you what they want. Different flies require different techniques. ie Poppers use a quick strip to make the popping noise.

@SaginawRiverFishing You can get fly line from $25 to over $100 dollars. The RIO fly line I was using was about $75. If you keep up the maintenance on the fly line, they last for quite a few years, unless you run them thru a motor prop :)

Thanks for the good nod on the video. The boat has a open floor design, factor in strong winds and fast current....going to reel prevented the slack line from getting caught & tangled on the boat & $75 fly line getting chewed up by the motor. Not much walking room on the boat :) A stripping basket was useless this day.

With pontoons you can control the boat with fins attached to your feet, while you use two hands to fly fish. Most pontoons give you easy out & in access. Find a shallow spot, move off the seat & stand up, right in the middle of the boat, fish, then get back on the seat to keep going. Canoes are much more streamlined for traveling distance. Toons are much more stable when standing. Trolling motors can be attached to both.

@thetweedtweeker they are rainbows, goldens have a gold belly and olive/reddish ovals on the backs, real colorful, more colorful than a brook, and are much smaller. To get to goldens, you have to backpack in. Take HWY 395 from LA towards Carson, NV, hang a left at Lone Pine, drive until the road ends, start walking, straight up ... when you get to cottonwood pass there are many lakes and streams to fish

i agree with locked wrist (like tennis), and not letting wrist go behind vertical too much, as he said regarding snagging behind you - but keeping your arm tight to your chest ( rules out shoulder power) will limit casting distance and be a bit uncomfortable after a while- but no-one has identical casting actions, all have their own style which works for them I think comments are a bit harsh, as I think there are a couple of good tips there for beginners before they get into bad habits

Well of course if you fly fish somwhere where fish are everywhere well yeah you can cast facing the current or even blindfolded if you want, but when you're in a river you have to cast downstream so you can have some tension in your line. Otherwise the line keep coming toward you wich is really not good when a fish strike.

Losing fish is a fact of life for people that hook alot but the sheer number of hook ups is far better with fly fishing. If the fish is running downstream and you are pulling them against the current then the hook is pointed in a way that it can come out easily and you are fighting the current as well as the fish. You should never try to pull a fish against the current if you can avoid it. I prefer to let the current push them toward the bank as I apply steady pressure and walk down to them.

Totally its the same as Alaska in that respect. Mind your business shut up and fish with etiquette. You have to respect the locals and why try and change it to suit you. You dont go around stepping on toes. Its a place that can break you, you have to be a certain breed to live up there.

cant stand fishing in lakes myself, always forget the mosquito repellent, and i moved to the silver valley in north idaho (only a 30 min drive to montana) about 4 years ago from california and i understand completely why people up here dont like californians, people up here are so mutch nicer, see how many random people wave hi to you in your town if you live in california or a place like it, its easy to adapt up here

Quite a few peeps i've met have come here and hit the ground running because they fit right in and blended in. Montana is a pretty place but the state of Montana actually dislikes out of state people in a big way. It is it very very true. They will smile to your face and talk a lot of trash about you behind your back if they you are from "Out of state" as they call it. It is a real misnomer that people from Montana are "Real good people". Be careful there if you visit. To the guy that put together this vdeo, great job.
