I would have thought somewhere around 8ft 6 inch would? be ideal.Anything longer will mean more leverage for you and it might be tiring.Don't go for distance first.Go for accuracy and good presentation.And a smaller fly reel to make the outfit lighter.Don't buy a metal fly reel,get carbon or plastic types,they will be lighter too. Your local fly fishing shop may be able to help you,maybe with a secondhand outfit to start with.

mate, a little Tip I was told by a Lengend in Australia 35 years ago when I started, master fishing with nymphs, remember they are 90% of the fish diet. remember to fish them slow, twitch the tip of rod. also in spring small wet flies, small streamers, fuzzy wuzzy, hammils. red? and black matuka, olive wooly buggers. Around early 1990's I designed the original "Firebird".It had a FLAT head,which the new birds don't have.I crushed them flat with pliers,then overpainted with hot orange fluoro paint.A small sash of silver tinsel,not? gold and a waist band behind the shot of varnished black thread.Some say I got the idea from Hawaiian skirts.Maybe I should have named it the "Hawaii Hopper" . I named it after the Firebird car.But if someone else reckons they invented it later,that's OK too. As long as it catches .

I sold all my? fly tying gear a few years ago,but it can be really satisfying. The Pearly Daddy is tied by Sid Knight,and I honestly think in a size 10 size it is turning out to be my top fly.Passing my now famous invention of the "Firebird" fly.We'll see if Sid wants to reveral the dressing.

There's no such person as the perfect caster.There's casting,and there's CATCHING. I know which one I want to be with .Nobody ever taught me to cast,but I struggle along flailing away and enjoying myself.I only just learnt about throwing a "D" on the cast in that trip with Richard.Its a tricky place to cast.Wait? till you see the next trout film going up.Almost impossible casting,but still I got plenty of action. "Jungle" fishing at its best.

we tried? several tv sites a year ago.They said no money,trip off and get sponsorship.Most didn't even have the courtesy to answer.So we said stuff it,we'll pay for them ourselves,and put them on the "Tube".I think you have to be in with the right crowd to get on tv.We're now not bothered.We don't want our fishing programmes "diluted" just to appeal to a "wider" audience.TV fishing lasts an hour.YouTube is 24/7.

That is in Southeastern Pa? It is only 2 hour ride up to me. But down there is many trout streams. The Little Lehigh in Allentown is a limestone stream wild fish. The Manatawany south? of Boyertown is a good stocked and wild stream. The Big Lehigh is good. Check the Pa. Fish Commission website for a list of wild trout streams in Pa. They have an interactive map you can use. Hope to see you when you come to Pa. Jim

Another point I just thought of. The Pa. Fish Commission doesn't have enough fish to stock this river. There are tens of thousands in the river. 95% wild. There are a couple derbies on it once a year. We are trying to get them to have them somewhere more suitable for kids. Where? they can catch them easier. Most of their fish turn wild after a year, but still can be distinguished from stream-bred trout. Come on down to Pa. and you'll get some wild ones. Jim

Good question. Stocked fish are going to be pale in color, have more defects like fin's missing, tails snipped. When trout are raised in a hatchery they are fed pellets which has enough nutriants too keep them alive, in the wild the fish get there color from what they eat. If you? were to cut them open wild fish are red meat. stocked are white. And lastly I've been watching these fish spawn for years. I do also catch small ones. 6" and smaller. Thanks Jim

It's sad too see the elitism myth is still being propogated. Whilst it's true that the fishing shown here is ridiculously expensive (and sadly that element does still exist) it is worth bearing in mind? that oliver works for Orvis co who own and run these beats to make a huge profit mainly from tourists/stockbrokers and once in a lifetimers. I fish the Avon and other chalkstreams for a season for less than the price of one day ticket mentioned here. It's out there if you want it .

well I can only go on my area (south of England) I live on the south downs, truly beautiful and plenty of chalk streams, the one nearest to me to fish a beat for the day is £240 that's the cheapest I know of, some go way up to £2000 for the day i am sure? their are more expensive ones if you have money to burn or a millionaire :-/

I think I disagree. In clear waters like? these, accuracy is essential, so he takes enough backcasts to get it perfect. i think hes careful not to have the flyline create a shadow that spooks the fish as well.

Hi AJ, Sure I have tips The #1 tip is DO IT you won't be sorry. You can get good blanks pretty inexpensive, and build very nice rods. I make all the ones I use. Just finished one two weeks ago and it works great. It's what I've been using in most of the recent videos. The blanks I use are RX-6 Batson or Rainshadow. 8 to 9 feet 3 or 4 peice. It is easier then tying fly's. You can get a book or video on how to do it. You? can get spacing chart from their website. Jim
